About Me

I like to solve challenging technical problems. Currently I'm in SF. I spent a couple years vagabonding around the planet before moving here. I enjoy working on Kubernetes clusters, and scaling compute. Over the past decade I have gone from building file servers for small businesses, to writing the firmware in solar cars, helping accelerate drug discovery by building highly scalable compute clusters in the cloud, scaling code sandboxes for AI agents, and now running production infrastructure at Contour.

When I'm not coding, you can find me stargazing, riding my motorcycle, portaging in the wilderness, or scuba diving.

May 2026 – Present

Built the company's production AWS/Kubernetes platform from scratch so the rest of the team could ship without thinking about the cluster.

  • OpenTofu/Terragrunt, EKS, Karpenter, Argo CD, and GitOps across dev and prod
  • Workload placement on dedicated node pools; Istio ambient mTLS and Tailscale-gated APIs
  • Temporal workers in production for long-running AI-agent jobs
  • Grafana, Mimir, Victoria Logs, and per-PR preview environments

October 2024 – May 2026

Scaled the code sandbox platform that lets the Julius agent actually run code.

  • Sandbox infrastructure across multiple Kubernetes clusters for thousands of concurrent users
  • Cut sandbox spin-up from 30+ seconds to under 10 seconds
  • Rebuilt Terraform so environment deploys went from hours of error-prone applies to minutes
  • Cut sandbox persistent-storage cost 90%; led the infrastructure side of SOC2

October 2020 – March 2023

Scaled the ML pipeline from Phenomic to handle tens of terabytes of data, and to turn around results in a much quicker amount of time.

  • Kubernetes on AWS scaling from 4 nodes to 300 and back down to process large microscopy datasets
  • Reduced pipeline processing time by 90% by horizontally scaling with Dask (1 week to 4 hours)
  • Interviewed and trained two cloud engineers to work on the platform

Built a highly scalable machine learning platform to accelerate drug discovery.

  • Redesigned storage architecture for microscopy data, reducing cost by 90%
  • Fully automated stack deployment, enabling licensing of the platform to third parties
  • Found performance improvements in the ML codebase with TensorBoard, Prometheus, and Grafana
  • Tuned node selection to maximize load factors and reduce cost

Lead Firmware Engineer

Blue Sky Solar Racing

February 2018 – September 2021

Built and raced a solar car across the Australian Outback.

  • Built the entire firmware stack for the Gen 10 car: GPIO, SPI, ADC, and the rest
  • Led firmware improvements for the Gen 11 car
  • Read PCB schematics and followed traces to debug hardware issues
  • CNC machined the mould for the chassis

I spent 4 years transforming a hacked-together Airflow pipeline into a highly scalable machine learning platform capable of processing several terabytes of microscopy data daily, enabling the biology team to iterate quickly.

Working primarily on the firmware team I built the embedded firmware for the solar car — driver inputs to the motor, plus all of our telemetry. I also ran the CFD compute cluster, wrote the CNC programs for the chassis mould, and drove the car.

Intel iGPU Split Virtualization

Got mediated GPU virtualization working on an Intel integrated GPU — GVT-g on KVM/QEMU with VFIO/mdev — so multiple guests could share one iGPU instead of taking exclusive passthrough. A long Gentoo kernel-config rabbit hole that actually worked.
